General InformationBackground | About Montréal | Tourist Information | Site Map | Background
The idea of staging a Congress for railway research with participants from around the world originated from a workshop on the subject of railway research and development held in Tokyo in 1992. The goal was to promote and enhance international co-operation among railway companies, manufacturers and their component-suppliers, as well as representatives from the fields of research and science, through papers, poster-sessions and open discussion.
In 1994, the inaugural WCRR was launched in Paris, the seat of the International Union of Railways (UIC). The Congress was a huge success attracting over 1,000 attendees.
WCRR continuity and support is provided by International Organizing and Executive Committees made up of representatives from UIC, SNCF, UTMR - Trenitalia, DB, RTRI, AAR plus the Rail Safety and Standards Board in the UK. Individual Congresses are the responsibility of their home countries.
