Welcome

Dear Colleagues:

I am delighted to invite you to the 7th World Congress on Railway Research. On behalf of the WCRR Organizing Committees, I look forward to welcoming you to Montréal, Canada between June 4 and June 8, 2006.

The World Congresses on Railway Research promote international sharing and cooperation in the fields of railway research and innovation covering operational, environmental and safety management, as well as the traditional engineering topics. Under the guidance of the WCRR Organizing Committee, WCRR Congresses bring the largest, most comprehensive group of railway researchers, technologists and decision makers together at a single event. These world class events draw upon the expertise and experience of railway organizations and countries across the globe. Among the attendees and presenters will be representatives from France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the USA, including delegates from the UIC, SNCF, DB, Trenitalia, RTRI, Korail, RSSB, AAR, TTCI, CN and CP, as well as from suppliers, manufacturers and operating railways from around the world.

WCRR 2006 will encourage structured discussions on specific technical issues and provide opportunities to discuss innovative solutions and their implementation.

The Montréal Congress will bring together labour leaders, key suppliers, government representatives, customers and leading edge researchers in freight and passenger rail transport under the theme for WCRR 2006 "Progressing Together/Le progrès ensemble". The meetings will see research knowledge and experience shared among railway researchers and technologists from around the world, to encourage, promote and support working together to develop and implement technologies and processes to increase market share for both freight and passenger rail transportation in a safe, environmentally friendly, and cost effective manner.

The technical program will deal with applied research relating to key issues governing progress in the railway industry, including railway capacity, service reliability, sustainable development for railways, system optimization, innovative approaches to design and maintenance, security and fundamentals of railway science, and socioeconomic studies. Among other topics, emphasis will be placed on freight activities, at the forefront of railway operations across North America. I look forward to welcoming you to Montréal in June 2006.

With best wishes,

Roy Allen
Chair,
WCRR 2006 Organizing Committee
